- Refusing to attempt a maneuver the examiner asked for
- Stalling somewhere that put the car in danger

What the examiner checks
- Vehicle familiarization and safety inspection (not scored, but the test cannot proceed if the vehicle fails it)
- Basic control skills — off-road exercises including a Y-turn and parallel parking, scored on encroachments, repositionings, and final position; passing requires six errors or less
- On-road driving — turns, stop intersections, expressway driving, and urban/residential handling
- Segments are given in order and each must be passed to continue; failing any segment ends the test

The driving skills test is given by approved third-party driver testing businesses, not the Secretary of State directly — their fees, including retest fees, aren't state-regulated, so no fixed retestFeeUSD is published. Only one attempt is allowed per 24-hour period unless the failure was due to faulty equipment or documents, in which case same-day retesting is possible. A failed attempt on driver performance cannot be rescheduled the same day; the next attempt restarts from the beginning (inspection, basic control skills, on-road driving).
