Privacy Policy

DMV Prep ("the App") is built so that studying for your permit test doesn't require handing over your personal information. This page explains, plainly, what data the App does and doesn't collect. Most of this page covers the iOS app — a few details (iCloud sync, Apple Intelligence) are Apple-only — and the two sections on the website are marked as such. DMV Prep is also on Android; that app collects nothing either, and has its own privacy policy.

Accounts are optional

You never need an account to study. Every feature works signed out, and nothing in a study flow asks you to sign up.

An account exists for one purpose: carrying your progress between the app and the website. If you choose to create one, this is what that involves.

  • What we hold about you: your email address and a user ID. Sign-in is operated for us by Google (Firebase Authentication) under Google’s privacy terms. If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your address, we receive only Apple’s relay address.
  • What your progress is stored against: the user ID, and nothing else. Your study record is kept in a separate database from your sign-in details, and your email address is not in it.
  • What is in your study record: streak, XP, which questions you missed, module progress, test history, road-test checklist and drive log, and your state and language.
  • We never sell it, never share it for advertising, and never use it to profile you.

You can download everything we hold, or delete the account and all of it, from your account page or from Settings → Account in the app. Deletion is immediate and permanent, and we keep no backup copy. See deleting your account.

Deleting your account does not touch the study progress stored on your own device — that never left the device and is yours to keep or clear.

Your study data stays on your device

Test results, quiz scores, bookmarks, wrong-answer history, streaks, and settings are stored locally on your device. Signed out — the default — we never receive, see, or have access to any of it.

If you sign in, a copy of that progress is sent to our server so your devices can share it, stored against your user ID and nothing else. That is the only thing an account changes. It is described in full under “Accounts are optional” above.

If you're signed into iCloud on your device, this local data may sync across your own devices using Apple's private CloudKit database. That sync is between your devices and your personal iCloud account; it does not pass through, or become visible to, any server we operate.

The AI coach runs on your device

When available, wrong-answer explanations, follow-up questions, and self-check quizzes are generated using Apple's on-device Apple Intelligence (FoundationModels) — processed entirely on your device. Nothing about your questions, answers, or conversations with the coach is sent to us or to any third party for this feature. On devices without Apple Intelligence, the App falls back to built-in, deterministic explanations — still with no network calls.

Anonymous product analytics

The App uses Firebase Analytics to understand aggregate feature usage — for example, how many people complete onboarding, or how many practice tests are taken. It sends:

  • An app-instance identifier and technical device/app information used by Firebase to measure aggregate app usage
  • The name of the event (e.g. "test completed") and non-personal parameters (e.g. score, pass/fail)

Firebase may also derive approximate location from network data for aggregate reporting. No account information, question content, or AI coach conversations are included in our custom analytics events. Firebase processes this information under Google's privacy terms.

Crash diagnostics

We use Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports and technical diagnostic information so we can identify and fix app failures. Crashlytics data is used only for app stability and is not used for advertising or tracking.

Your progress on this website stays in your browser

If you take a practice test, work through the Study Path, or use the road-test checklist and driving log on this website, that progress — modules and lessons completed, practice results, questions you missed, your checklist, your logged practice hours, and roughly when your test is — is stored in your own browser, on the device you are using. Signed out, it is never sent to us and we cannot see it.

We do not use cookies to recognise you. Signed out — which is the default, and how the site works unless you deliberately create an account — this progress does not follow you between devices, is not shared between this website and the App, and anyone else using the same browser profile on the same device would see it. Clearing your browser's site data erases it, and nothing on the website requires it — every lesson, practice test and guide is readable without it.

If you sign in, a copy of that same progress is sent to our server so it can be merged with what your other devices have and sent back. That is the whole point of an account, and it is the only circumstance in which your study progress leaves your browser. It is stored against your user ID, never your email address. Sign out and it stops being sent.

Your test date is stored as a rough range, such as “in the next two weeks”, never as an actual date.

Website analytics

The DMV Prep website uses Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate site usage, such as pages visited, referral source, browser and device type, and approximate location derived from IP address. Google may set a cookie or similar identifier for this purpose. We do not send study answers, question content, account data, or personally identifying information to Google Analytics. The website's analytics are separate from the app's — the two do not share an identifier, and we cannot connect a website visitor to an app user.

No advertising

The App shows no ads and includes no third-party advertising SDKs, ad identifiers, or ad tracking of any kind.

No data is sold or shared

We do not sell, rent, or share analytics data with third parties for marketing purposes.

Children's privacy

The App is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. Studying collects none at all. The only personal information any account holds is an email address, given by someone who chose to create an account. If you believe a child has created one, email us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes — for example, if a future version adds a feature that changes what data is collected — we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date above.
