Why this is marked at the end

Showing you the answer at question three hands you questions eleven and seventeen, because the signs people confuse travel in pairs — a yield and a merge, a no-passing zone and a do-not-enter. Marking the whole paper at once is the only way the score means anything. If you would rather be taught as you go, the sign guide's flashcard deck reveals each meaning on demand and tracks what you have mastered.

What the signs section actually tests

Two things, and most people only study the first. Recognition — what this shape and colour mean — and the action it demands, which is what the question usually asks for. A diamond warns, a red octagon commands, a fluorescent green pentagon marks a school zone; the test asks what you do about it. Every sign you miss here comes back with both.

Signs that get mistaken for each other

These are the pairs that cost marks. Each line is the distinction the sign's own page draws out.

After the signs

The signs section is one part of the knowledge test. When you are scoring above the bar here, move to a full permit practice test for your state, or read the written test guide for what else is on it.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on this road signs test?

Twenty, drawn from the same bank as the sign guide, with ten minutes on the clock. You get four options for each sign, and nothing is marked until you submit — the same way the signs section of the real knowledge test works.

What score do I need to pass?

This test is marked at 80%, which is 16 of 20. Most states set the knowledge test at 80%, but the official passing score and the number of sign questions vary — confirm both with your state licensing agency.

Are these the actual DMV sign questions?

No. No state publishes its live test. These are practice questions built from the federal sign standards every state teaches from, and every sign has a full reference page here with its meaning and the action it demands.

What happens when the timer runs out?

The paper is submitted exactly as it stands and marked. Anything you left blank is reported as blank rather than counted as a wrong answer — running out of time is a pacing problem, not a knowledge one, and the result should tell you which you have.

Is the road signs test free?

Yes. No account, no ads, no paywall, and nothing you do here leaves your device.
