Most mistakes cost you points you can afford to lose. These are different — a critical error ends the drive on the spot, however well the rest of it went:
- A collision, or contact with a curb, cone, or object
- The examiner had to grab the wheel, brake, or speak to prevent danger
- A dangerous or illegal maneuver
- A moving violation — speeding, running a light or stop sign
- Refusing to attempt a maneuver the examiner asked for
- Stalling somewhere that put the car in danger

Applicants who fail once or twice must wait two days before retesting. After a third failure, the applicable driver-education component must be completed before a fourth attempt. Walk-ins must arrive by 4:30 p.m. weekdays or 11:30 a.m. Saturdays to test that day; scheduled appointments require arriving 15 minutes early. Translators/interpreters are permitted as of September 30, 2024. The page does not itemize specific maneuvers evaluated.
