Florida vehicle check

FLHSMV checks the car before the drive starts. Tick these off the night before — a vehicle that fails the check ends the appointment before you have driven anywhere.

• Valid registration
• Proof of insurance
• Passes a basic vehicle inspection performed by the examiner
• Functioning horn, rear-view mirror, directional signals, steering wheel, brakes, tires, brake lights, and taillights
• Operable headlights and driver's-side windshield wipers
• No cracked or broken glass that hinders visibility
• Doors present and operable from inside and outside; stationary seats
• Vehicle must permit the driver to give hand signals
• Not a low-speed vehicle (20-25 mph top speed)

ℹ️ Practice budget — no official threshold published

Florida publishes the Class E Driving Skills Test's 14 scored maneuvers and vehicle-inspection failure conditions but not a numeric scoring threshold, so the practice total below uses a generic 15-error budget.

Also worth knowing

• The vehicle is inspected before the test — a defective horn, mirror, signal, brakes, tires, or lights, a missing driver-side wiper, no working headlights, cracked glass that blocks the view, or an expired tag means the test won't be given.
• No other passengers are permitted during the test. The examiner explains any mistakes only after the test is complete.

• Approaching and completing turns from the correct lane at a safe speed
• Scanning left-right-left and covering the brake at every intersection

• Responding correctly to green, yellow, and red lights
• Yielding right of way when the law requires it
• Yielding to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks

• Keeping a following distance you could actually stop within
• Driving at a speed that suits the limit, traffic, and conditions
• Backing in a straight line, looking over your shoulder, under control
• Parallel parking within the space, close to the curb
• Turning the car around in a limited space (three-point turn)
• Parking accurately in a marked bay and pulling out safely
• Parking on a grade with the wheels turned the right way
• Merging onto a higher-speed road at the speed of traffic
