Idaho vehicle check
DMV checks the car before the drive starts. Tick these off the night before — a vehicle that fails the check ends the appointment before you have driven anywhere.
What ends the Idaho road test immediately
Most mistakes cost you points you can afford to lose. These are different — a critical error ends the drive on the spot, however well the rest of it went:
- A collision, or contact with a curb, cone, or object
- The examiner had to grab the wheel, brake, or speak to prevent danger
- A dangerous or illegal maneuver
- A moving violation — speeding, running a light or stop sign
- Refusing to attempt a maneuver the examiner asked for
- Stalling somewhere that put the car in danger
Road tests share this list because each item is a safety failure rather than a scoring one. DMV publishes the rules that apply in Idaho — check the official source above before test day.
What the examiner checks
- Pre-drive vehicle check — finding and demonstrating required equipment
- Arm signals for turning and stopping
- Complete stops
- Gap and stop-line judgment
- Lane position and steering control
- Signaling
- Speed and following distance
- Acceleration and deceleration
- Right-of-way
- Parking within 18 inches of the curb
Idaho's skills test takes about 30 minutes and is given by independent ITD-certified examiners you contact directly, not at a DMV counter. If a required inspection item fails, the test does not continue. You fail on more than 12 errors or on any single critical error — a dangerous action, disobeying a sign or signal, driving onto a curb or sidewalk, a lane violation, striking an object, parking more than 18 inches from the curb, speeding more than 10 mph over the limit, or five errors of the same skill. Without a valid license you may not drive yourself to the test.
