Massachusetts Road Test Guide
What to bring, what your test vehicle needs, what the examiner is actually watching for, and what happens if you don't pass — summarized from RMV's own pages for Massachusetts and linked to the source.
Bring with you
- Valid, legible learner's permit
- Completed Class D road test application
- A sponsor: age 21+, at least 1 year of driving experience, holding a valid U.S. state/territory driver's license (foreign licenses not eligible to sponsor)
- Parent/guardian/Department of Children and Families/boarding-school-headmaster signature on the application if the applicant is under 18
Massachusetts vehicle check
RMV checks the car before the drive starts. Tick these off the night before — a vehicle that fails the check ends the appointment before you have driven anywhere.
What ends the Massachusetts road test immediately
Most mistakes cost you points you can afford to lose. These are different — a critical error ends the drive on the spot, however well the rest of it went:
- A collision, or contact with a curb, cone, or object
- The examiner had to grab the wheel, brake, or speak to prevent danger
- A dangerous or illegal maneuver
- A moving violation — speeding, running a light or stop sign
- Refusing to attempt a maneuver the examiner asked for
- Stalling somewhere that put the car in danger
Road tests share this list because each item is a safety failure rather than a scoring one. RMV publishes the rules that apply in Massachusetts — check the official source above before test day.
What the examiner checks
- Hand signals
- Starting the engine; starting and stopping the vehicle
- Parallel parking
- Backing approximately 50 feet
- Left and right turns
- Starting, stopping, and turning on a hill
- Three-point turn (turning around between curbs)
- Entering and leaving intersections
- Recognizing and obeying traffic signs, lights, and signals
- Lane discipline and signaling before lane changes
- Maintaining following distance
- Speed control for conditions and posted limits
- Yielding right-of-way
- Proper driving posture and hand position
Under 18, a full Driver's Education Program is required before testing; 18 and older, it is not. The $35 road test fee is not refunded on failure, being unprepared (including a vehicle that fails the examiner's inspection), not having a registered vehicle, being late, or not appearing, or canceling/rescheduling with less than 72 hours' notice — each retest is charged again, and no more than 6 Class D road tests are allowed in a 12-month period. A sponsor may not sponsor more than 3 applicants in a 1-year period without RMV approval. An interpreter may accompany the applicant (own or RMV-provided) and may only interpret the examiner's exact words, not add instructions.
