Air Brakes
Master the system that decides whether a loaded truck stops.
Air brakes are the one system on the vehicle that fails slowly and visibly if you know what to watch. Learn the order the parts act in — compressor, governor, tanks, warning device, spring brakes — and the pressure at which each one changes behavior, because almost every question is really asking whether you would notice the loss in time. The handling half is the same idea: brake lag and fade are both consequences of a system that stores its energy as air, so the answers reward the driver who plans the stop before the pedal is needed.
The rules that matter
- Air brakes take about half a second to build pressure before they grab, so total stopping distance is longer than a car's even before the load is counted.
- Know the numbers: the governor cuts out near 125 psi and back in near 100, the low-air warning must sound before 60 psi, and spring brakes set between 20 and 45.
- On a long downgrade, shift into a low gear before you start down and let the engine hold you back — brakes used the whole way overheat and fade.
- Never fan the brakes on a long grade; repeated on-off use bleeds off air faster than the compressor can replace it.
- Drain the air tanks daily — water and compressor oil collect at the bottom, where they freeze the valves in winter and foul them the rest of the year.
- With the engine off and the brakes released, pressure should hold — a falling gauge is a leak, and excess push rod travel is a brake out of adjustment.
